Rebranding La Ola

Who is La Ola?

Family-owned and operated in Kyle, Texas, La Ola specializes in frozen Mexican desserts that go beyond the usual flavor palette. Made in-store with fresh and natural ingredients, their goal is always to honor their heritage while building new traditions.

Logo Redesign

While the original logo made reference to the playful nature of La Ola’s mission with experimental flavors, it was missing the roots to its Mexican identity. By implementing the recognizable “paleta” silhouette in the arrangement of the dahlia, Mexico’s national flower, a new brandmark was created that tied back to its origins while maintaining the vibrancy and fun of La Ola’s products.

Typography

Custom Logotype

To further reference its Mexican origins, the logo was inspired by the geometric patterns commonly found throughout the visual language of the culture, such as in folk clothing, architecture and historical writing systems. The type was built on a modular grid and is only used in the logo.

Type Pairing

To complement the logotype is Ebony from the TypeTogether foundry. Finding a type that worked in both Spanish and English was most important and Ebony fulfilled these needs with a large library of accented characters. The uniqueness in its appearance created by the boldness of its weights and clean, sharp angles, while maintaining legibility made it an easy choice to use throughout the brand.

Menu

Available in English and Spanish, the double-sided menu features the store’s growing list of over 30 popsicle flavors, with some available for sale in pint sizes. Customers are encouraged to ask about seasonal flavors and offer suggestions for new ones.

The letter size means convenient distribution and viewing when outside and in-store, allowing for customers to take their time deciding their dessert.

Mobile Cart

In spirit of the familiar ice cream carts pushed by a “paletero” on a hot summer’s day, La Ola offers their popsicles from a mobile cart for catering events and the special occasions when selling directly to the public outside the store.

While specific or seasonal flavors may be requested at events, a full menu of the year-round flavors are on display in English and Spanish.

Ice Cream Pints

While the popsicles are meant to be enjoyed in-store or from the cart, ice cream pints of select flavors are offered to take home. Since the availability of pints and their flavors change frequently, a flexible packaging was needed.

This design allows the store to write in the flavor and any other necessary information about it right on the carton. Additional text, in English and Spanish, encourages the customer to contact the store with comments and questions about ingredients. To aid distinction, cream based flavors use “paleta purple” lids and fruit based flavors use “fresa pink” lids.
